The University of Uyo has banned the sale of handouts and compulsory sale of textbooks by lecturers and other staff of the University.

The Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Prof. Enefiok Essien announced this today at the grand finale of a three-day orientation exercise organized for the newly admitted students.

Professor Essien, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, said staff of the University of Uyo are well paid and have no reason whatsoever to extort innocent children under the guise of textbooks.

He said the University will resist any attempt by lecturers to make life difficult for students, some of whom are self-sponsored, toiling day and night to pay their school fees.

The Vice Chancellor urged students to watch out for lecturers, who either selling textbooks directly or indirectly through class representatives.

Professor Essien also tasked the students to report any lecturer giving assignments from a textbook or asking them to write their names for the purchase of textbooks, as such motives amount to sale by intimidation and threat.

According to him, a good book sells itself, stressing that there was no basis for lecturers to know names of students who have bought their textbooks.
