The Comptroller General of Customs (CGC) Adewale Adeniyi, on Thursday, 5 September 2024, reaffirmed the transformative role that digital technologies play in modernising its operations in Nigeria, highlighting efforts to improve trade facilitation, enhance efficiency, and strengthen risk management.

This was revealed by the Commander of the Training and Doctrine Command, Gwagwalada, Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs Sulaiman Bomai, who represented the Comptroller-General of Customs while delivering a paper presentation at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru.

In his paper, titled “Digital Economy and Nigeria Customs Operations: Issues, Challenges, and Prospects,” presented to the participants of the Senior Executive Course (SEC) 46, 2024, DCG Bomai outlined a clear path for the NCS in the digital era and urged other agencies to collaborate to ensure Nigeria remains competitive in the global trade environment.

He discussed the integration of automation, electronic payment systems, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Customs processes, which, according to him, have significantly improved trade facilitation, boosted the Service’s efficiency, and enhanced risk management.

While commending the progress made by Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi, DCG Bomai also highlighted the achievements of NCS officers at NIPSS, stating: “The officers should serve as a model for other personnel in the Service.”

He further elaborated: “An important feature of the NCS’s presence at NIPSS was the active involvement of its senior officers enrolled in the course. Among them was Comptroller Omale, whose contributions to discussions were described as exemplary.”

DCG Bomai noted that Comptroller Omale’s outstanding performance earned him a role as rapporteur, responsible for documenting key points from the sessions. He emphasised that “The achievements of the Customs officers at NIPSS should serve as a model for other personnel in the Service.”

DCG Bomai concluded by conveying the Comptroller-General’s gratitude to NIPSS for providing officers with the opportunity to participate in the Senior Executive Course and reaffirming the NCS’s commitment to strengthening their partnership.
