In a time when Nigeria’s economic survival hinges heavily on the stability and productivity of the oil-rich Niger Delta, the Joint Task Force South-South Operation Delta Safe (JTF SS OPDS) has emerged as a formidable shield against sabotage, oil theft, and insecurity. Since its activation on June 24, 2016, the multi-agency task force has continued to evolve in its mission — protecting national assets, ensuring operational integrity in the oil and gas sector, and fostering peace and development in host communities.
Covering a vast and challenging terrain that spans Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers States, as well as portions of Ondo, Edo, Anambra, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Imo, and Cross River, the Joint Operations Area (JOA) is critical to the country’s oil output. Criminal activities such as pipeline vandalism, illegal bunkering, and militant attacks have long threatened the nation’s prosperity. However, under the firm and strategic leadership of a Rear Admiral and a command structure integrating all arms of Nigeria’s security architecture, JTF OPDS has made significant headway.

The Defence Correspondents, led by Commander Godwin Egbunu said ” To give true perspective of our operational activities and also to avoid manipulation of our operational occurrences by enemies of the Nigerian state to perpetrate their evil acts of portraying the country in a bad light.
Rear Admiral Noel Madugu, the current Commander of Operation Delta Safe, has brought focused, intelligent leadership to the task force, ensuring swift and strategic responses to emerging threats. He is ably supported by Brigadier General U.G. Yusuf, the Chief of Staff of OPDS, whose administrative expertise and coordination have been instrumental in keeping the engine of this complex operation running smoothly. Their synergy has strengthened the cohesion of the command, reinforcing discipline, precision, and mission clarity.
Also at the forefront is Commodore Patrick Meteke, the Maritime Component Commander and official representative of the OPDS Commander in key engagements. Commodore Meteke’s command of maritime operations has proven crucial in combating sea-based threats, including piracy, illegal bunkering, and waterway sabotage. His gallant oversight and tactical acumen have greatly contributed to the reduction of sea robbery and have reaffirmed Nigeria’s control over its coastal and offshore waters.
During the first quarter of 2025 alone, the task force recorded a staggering 89 percent operational success rate. It successfully demobilized over 570 illegal oil refining sites, 918 storage facilities, and 194 large wooden boats used for transporting stolen products. More than 3.5 million litres of crude oil, 1.5 million litres of illegally refined diesel (AGO), and thousands of litres of other petroleum products were intercepted and recovered. These operations culminated in the arrest of 681 suspects, many of whom have since been prosecuted.
The ripple effect of these bold interventions has been profound. Terminal Factors on major pipelines — Trans Niger, Trans Ramos, and Trans Escravos — improved to 95 percent, while national crude oil production surged from 1.2 million barrels per day in June 2024 to 1.85 million as of May 25, 2025. This is not just a military victory, but a win for Nigeria’s economy.
In parallel, the clearance of 13 militant and pirate camps has drastically reduced sea robbery and piracy in Nigerian waters and the Gulf of Guinea to their lowest levels — in some cases, zero. Intelligence-led raids have also recovered 653 illicit weapons, sending a clear message that criminality will no longer find refuge in the creeks and swamps of the Niger Delta.
But the JTF’s work is not limited to firepower. Its non-kinetic approach, especially through Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) and community engagement, is equally commendable. The force has successfully mediated and resolved over 102 corporate social responsibility (CSR) related disputes between oil companies and host communities — including major firms like Chevron, AITEO, NAOC, and SEEPCO. These efforts have helped calm tensions, encourage cooperation, and promote sustainable peace.
The collaboration with Pipeline Private Security Contractors (PSCs) such as Tantita Security Services Nigeria Ltd, PINL, and others through the Joint Arms Boarding Team (JABT) and fortnightly OP PLUG meetings with the NNPCL, shows a high level of strategic alignment, intelligence sharing, and problem-solving.
This seamless fusion of firepower, diplomacy, and coordination across 12 national agencies — including the Army, Navy, Air Force, DSS, NSCDC, Customs, Immigration, Police, and EFCC — has made JTF SS OPDS a model of effective joint operations.
It is only fitting to give due credit to the men and women behind this success. Their commitment, courage, and sacrifice are not only protecting vital national resources but ensuring a stable platform for economic growth and national cohesion. From the leadership at headquarters to the boots on the ground, these patriots exemplify service at its finest.
Rear Admiral Noel Madugu, Brigadier General U.G. Yusuf, and Commodore Patrick Meteke deserve special commendation for their outstanding leadership and gallantry. Their vision, dedication, and tactical brilliance continue to inspire the rank and file of the task force, as well as reassure Nigerians that their oil-rich heartland is in safe hands.
Indeed, Operation Delta Safe is more than an initiative — it is a lifeline for Nigeria’s economic and national security architecture. Their ongoing work deserves continued support, recognition, and encouragement from all quarters, especially the media, which remains a vital stakeholder in this patriotic endeavour.
