The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. (Dr) Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has commended the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) for its continuous support towards safe, orderly, and regular migration in Nigeria.
She gave the commendation while receiving the Head of Mission of ICMPD in Nigeria, Ms. Isabelle Wolfsgruber, on a courtesy visit to the Commission in Abuja.
Hon. Dabiri-Erewa noted that ICMPD has been a valuable partner since NiDCOM’s inception, particularly in strengthening migration governance and diaspora engagement. She described the visit as timely and strategic in consolidating efforts to address irregular migration and amplify diaspora contributions to national development.
She noted despite all the warnings against dangerous and irregular migration, many still go on these journies , noting that this year alone , over 6000 have been evacuated back home by the International Organisation for Migration and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons(NCFRMI).
“These figures reflect why we must work even harder to discourage irregular migration and offer more viable alternatives,” she said.
The NiDCOM Boss stressed the importance of structured plans, robust diaspora policies, and the need for international cooperation in tackling the root causes of irregular migration. She also presented a copy of the Commission’s Voluntary Assets and Skills Placement for Returnees (VASP-R) policy to the ICMPD team, stating that the document is currently under review for broader impact.
Responding, Ms. Isabelle Wolfsgruber commended NiDCOM for its proactive approach to diaspora matters and reiterated ICMPD’s commitment to supporting the Commission in implementing sustainable migration programmes.
She acknowledged the strength of Nigeria’s diaspora, not only in financial remittances but also in the wealth of knowledge, networks, and expertise they offer.
“You gave such a powerful intervention at the last diaspora summit, highlighting the full value of Nigerian remittances—not just financial, but intellectual and structural. That’s where the true development power lies,” she said.
Ms. Wolfsgruber added that ICMPD would continue to engage with donors and development partners to ensure that NiDCOM’s strategic priorities are well aligned with ongoing and future programmes.
“This is not just about who funds what, but how we make the system work for itself. The Nigerian diaspora is a force for development, and we are proud to walk this journey with you,” she added.
