The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) recorded a 4.6% economic growth in 2025, outperforming the continental average despite global economic challenges, according to the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Touray.
Speaking in Abuja while presenting highlights of the Commission’s 2025 Annual Report, Touray attributed the growth to structural reforms, increased investments in mining and energy, improved regional trade facilitation, and a strong rebound in services, transport, and tourism.
He noted that inflation pressures eased in several member states due to coordinated monetary policies and improved food supply, while fiscal deficits narrowed through enhanced revenue mobilisation and spending discipline.
Touray also revealed a modest decline in the region’s debt-to-GDP ratio and expressed optimism that ECOWAS would achieve a stronger 5% growth in 2026.
