The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released its 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), warning that rainfall across many parts of Nigeria will last longer than normal
. The agency advised farmers to be cautious and avoid early cultivation to prevent losses caused by false starts of the rainy season.
According to NiMet, the 2026 forecast shows delayed onset in some areas and prolonged rainfall in others, which could affect farming activities, flooding patterns, and food production. Farmers were urged to rely on scientific weather information before planting and harvesting.
During the event, members of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria shared testimonials on how the NiMet SCP has helped them in previous farming seasons. These stories were delivered in different Nigerian languages, highlighting how weather information has improved farm planning and yields across the country.
The occasion also marked NiMet’s 140 years of service to Nigeria. As part of the celebration, past Directors-General of the agency were recognised and honoured for their contributions to weather forecasting and national development.
Stakeholders at the event praised NiMet for its consistency in providing timely and reliable climate information, especially as climate change continues to impact agriculture and livelihoods.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the official launch of the 2026 SCP report by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace, who reaffirmed the Federal Government’s support for NiMet’s role in safeguarding lives, agriculture, and the economy through accurate weather predictions.
