Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly scheduled for February 14–15, 2026.

He was received at the Bole International Airport by senior Ethiopian government officials, alongside Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and other dignitaries.

The summit will focus on advancing Africa’s shared development priorities under the Agenda 2063 framework.At the just concluded 48th Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, Nigeria recorded significant diplomatic achievements.

These was contained in a statement signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson
Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and made available to Newsmen in Abuja.

The Nigerian delegation, led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and attended by the Minister of Finance, reinforced the country’s leadership role in promoting Africa’s economic integration, peace, security, and democratic governance.

A key highlight of the session was the agreement to grant Nigeria a permanent seat on the Board of the African Central Bank.

This landmark decision also extends Nigeria’s representation to the Board of the Technical Convergence Committee of the African Monetary Institute, further strengthening Nigeria’s influence in shaping Africa’s financial and monetary architecture.In the area of peace and security, candidates jointly presented by ECOWAS Member States, including Nigeria, were successfully elected to the Peace and Security Council.

This outcome underscores the unity and cooperation within the West African bloc and reflects the region’s collective commitment to stability and security across the continent.Nigeria also demonstrated leadership in promoting democratic governance by convening a Ministerial High-Level Panel Discussion on Regional Partnerships for Democracy.

The event attracted wide participation from across Africa and the international community, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, inclusive governance, and sustainable development throughout the continent.
