The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has concluded a four-day Capacity Building and Regional Doctrine Workshop organised by the Joint Doctrine and Warfare Centre (JDWC) at the Army War College Nigeria, Abuja.
The workshop marked a significant step toward enhancing doctrinal development and operational effectiveness within the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) and across the region.

Delivering closing remarks on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Defence Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal FO Edosa, described the establishment of the JDWC as a decisive move to strengthen Nigeria’s sovereignty and military capability.
He noted that doctrine remains the intellectual foundation of military operations and must guide strategy, policy, and operational concepts.
The CDS commended the strong participation of national and regional partners, stating that their presence reflects a shared commitment to addressing evolving security challenges.
He acknowledged representatives from Ghana, Gambia, Senegal, and Sierra Leone for their contributions to the workshop.
He also appreciated the support of the British Defence Staff (West Africa), particularly the Defence Attaché and Colonel George Wilson, for facilitating resource persons. Their involvement, he noted, enhanced the quality of discussions and broadened professional perspectives.
General Oluyede further recognised the presence of the ECOWAS team and their efforts toward strengthening the ECOWAS Standby Force, stressing that international and regional collaboration remains essential for collective security and stability in West Africa.Earlier, the Director General of the JDWC, Major General AE Edet, described the workshop as a strategic initiative aligned with the Centre’s mandate to develop operational doctrines for the AFN.
He explained that the programme was divided into two phases one focused on Nigerian personnel and the other on regional participants to build a tri-service cadre of doctrine experts.
The successful conclusion of the workshop underscores the Defence Headquarters’ commitment to advancing joint doctrine development, deepening regional partnerships, and enhancing operational readiness. It represents another milestone in strengthening jointness, regional cooperation, and multi-agency coordination in addressing contemporary security challenges.
