The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has refuted a misleading report that distorted the remarks of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, on counterterrorism operations in Borno and Yobe States.
DHQ noted that the publication falsely portrayed the CDS as indicting residents of the two states as complicit in terrorism, describing such claims as inaccurate and harmful.
These was contained in a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information(DDI), Major General Samaila Uba on thursday in Abuja .
While the military would typically ignore such misrepresentations, DHQ stated that the potential to misinform the public and undermine ongoing operations necessitated an official clarification.
The CDS did not generalize or accuse entire communities but emphasized the importance of partnership, vigilance, and shared responsibility in combating terrorism.
He reiterated that counterterrorism is a collective duty, urging residents to reject all forms of terrorism and support security agencies with timely and credible intelligence.
DHQ explained that the CDS’ call for citizens to “take ownership” aligns with established counterinsurgency principles, which depend on strong civil-military cooperation.
The CDS referenced specific instances where criminal collaborators exploited community structures, including a case where wounded terrorists were found harbored within a locality.
This example, DHQ clarified, was not a blanket accusation but a factual observation intended to encourage vigilance and community support in ongoing operations.
The Armed Forces reaffirmed their commitment to defending national integrity, urged media professionalism, and commended citizens for their resilience and cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
