The leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) spearheaded a major protest in Abuja, drawing prominent opposition figures and supporters in a show of political unity.
Among those present were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party leader Peter Obi, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, ADC National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji, and ADC National Secretary Prof Rauf Aregbesola.
Other key ADC dignitaries were also present, voicing their concerns and demanding that INEC take necessary actions to ensure a free and fair political process.
The rally, tagged “Save Democracy,” was organized to protest actions taken by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which demonstrators described as biased and politically motivated.
Protesters accused INEC of taking steps that could undermine the ADC’s ability to participate effectively in the 2027 general elections.
The protest began at Maitama Roundabout and marched toward the INEC headquarters, symbolizing a direct challenge to the electoral body’s recent decisions.
Addressing the crowd, Atiku Abubakar stated that the protest was a peaceful effort to resist what he termed the partisanship of the electoral umpire.
He emphasized that the movement aimed to protect Nigeria’s democracy and prevent what opposition leaders fear could become a one-party state.
The protest was triggered by INEC’s removal of ADC National Chairman David Mark and National Secretary Prof Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal.
This action occurred amid an ongoing leadership dispute within the party and existing court cases regarding its structure.
Critics argued that INEC’s move violated a court order to maintain the status quo, raising concerns about electoral fairness and institutional neutrality.
Rauf Aregbesola, speaking at the rally, condemned what he described as undemocratic practices aimed at restricting political participation and weakening opposition alliances.
Peter Obi also addressed supporters, calling on Nigerians to defend democracy and reject any attempt to impose a one party system.
The protest drew large crowds and caused notable disruptions along the march route, highlighting growing political tension ahead of the 2027 elections.
