The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has launched a capacity-building programme focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve revenue generation, remittances, and reconciliation processes.
The training took place at the Ladi Kwali Hall of the Abuja Continental Hotel on April 13, 2026, bringing together senior Customs officers, tech experts, and lawmakers.
The initiative reflects a growing partnership between the NCS and the National Assembly aimed at strengthening transparency and accountability in public financial management.
Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, emphasized the Service’s commitment to adopting innovative technologies to enhance transparency and operational efficiency.
He noted that AI has become essential in understanding international trade patterns and improving Customs processes within the global trade value chain.
Adeniyi encouraged participants to actively engage in the training and maximize the opportunities presented by AI-driven systems.
Deputy Comptroller
General Kikelomo Adeola described the programme as timely and strategic, highlighting AI as a necessary tool for modern governance.
She stated that the training is designed to address gaps in revenue management and equip officers with skills to safeguard public funds using AI tools.
Lawmakers, including House Public Accounts Committee Chairman Bamidele Salam and Senate counterpart Senator Ahmed Aliyu, commended the initiative and stressed the importance of capacity building and collaboration.
The programme concluded with expert insights on AI’s role in trade facilitation, reinforcing the NCS’s commitment to leveraging technology for improved efficiency, transparency, and revenue assurance.
