The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to strengthening security in the South-East during an operational visit to troops at the Nkwagu Military Cantonment, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
The visit, conducted on Thursday, 9 July 2026, was aimed at assessing the combat readiness, operational effectiveness and welfare of personnel in line with the Army’s vision of building a professional, adaptive and resilient force.
Addressing officers and soldiers, the COAS commended their courage, discipline and commitment to safeguarding the nation despite prevailing security challenges.
Lieutenant General Shaibu charged the troops to remain vigilant, uphold the Constitution, respect human rights and sustain pressure against all criminal elements threatening peace and stability in the South-East.
During the visit, the Army Chief inspected key operational and welfare facilities, including the Military Hospital and soldiers’ accommodation, underscoring the importance of personnel welfare to operational success.
He reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to improving healthcare services, infrastructure and the overall well-being of troops to enhance morale and mission effectiveness.
The COAS also received operational and administrative briefings on ongoing activities, achievements and challenges, expressing satisfaction with the progress recorded by troops in the area.
He encouraged stronger collaboration with other security agencies, sister services and host communities to consolidate peace, strengthen security and ensure lasting stability across Ebonyi State and the wider South-East.
