The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare of retired military personnel by convening a one-day strategic retreat with leaders of various Military Veterans’ Associations in Abuja.

The retreat, held at the Army Headquarters Command Mess 1 in Asokoro in collaboration with the Retired Army, Navy and Air Force Officers’ Association of Nigeria (RANAO), focused on strengthening dialogue, unity and cooperation between serving military leadership and veterans.

In a press release signed by Major General Samaila Uba, Director, Defence Information, on 14 July 2026 in Abuja.

Representing the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Major General Jamal Abdussalam, the Chief of Defence Operations, said continuous engagement with veterans remains the most effective way to address their concerns and improve their welfare.

He stressed that under the leadership of the CDS, the welfare of military veterans remains a top priority, adding that Defence Headquarters is committed to maintaining regular consultations with retired personnel.

The Defence Headquarters also assured veterans that efforts are underway to implement the recently approved salary increase and the corresponding pension adjustments through the appropriate statutory processes.

The military leadership commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support for members of the Armed Forces, particularly his commitment to enhancing the welfare of serving and retired personnel.

Veterans were encouraged to remain patient while ongoing welfare initiatives are concluded and to continue upholding the military’s core values of discipline, loyalty and patriotism. The Defence Headquarters also pledged to pursue improved healthcare services, prompt pension payments and enhanced welfare packages for retirees.

The retreat concluded with a renewed commitment to stronger collaboration among veterans’ organisations, while urging retired personnel to remain active contributors to national development by mentoring younger generations and supporting initiatives that promote national unity and security.
