The Federal Government has praised the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) for its “Light Up the Nation” initiative, describing it as a strategic move to enhance security and grassroots development.
The commendation was given by George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, during a courtesy visit by ALGON leadership in Abuja on April 1, 2026.
The ALGON delegation was led by its President, Iliyasu Zakari, alongside members of its Board of Trustees.Akume noted that the initiative goes beyond beautification, emphasizing that improved lighting in communities will help deter crime and improve public safety.
He stressed that well-lit environments create safer and more conducive conditions for economic activities to thrive at the grassroots level.
The SGF also highlighted the current administration’s efforts under Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthen local government autonomy through improved funding and operational support.
He described these reforms as unprecedented and urged local government leaders to demonstrate accountability, discipline, and people-centered governance.
On insecurity, Akume emphasized the critical role of local governments, noting they are closest to the people and must actively report suspicious activities.
In his remarks, Zakari reaffirmed ALGON’s commitment to implementing the “Light Up Nigeria 774” initiative across all local government areas in alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
