The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening defence cooperation with the United States during a courtesy visit by the US Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Mr Frank Garcia, to the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
Representing the CDS, the Chief of Defence Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal Francis Edosa, described the Nigeria–United States relationship as one built on mutual respect, shared democratic values and a common commitment to regional and global peace and security. He also acknowledged the US government’s continued support in military training, intelligence sharing, counterterrorism and institutional development.
The development was disclosed in a statement signed by Major General Samaila Uba, Director Defence Information, on 14 July 2026 said Air Vice Marshal Edosa stressed that Africa’s evolving security challenges require stronger international partnerships, noting that closer collaboration is essential to tackling terrorism, violent extremism, transnational organised crime and other emerging threats. He expressed confidence that the visit would further strengthen bilateral defence ties.
He reiterated the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s commitment to professionalism, regional stability and sustained collaboration with international partners in promoting lasting peace and security across Nigeria and the African continent.
Speaking during the visit, Mr Frank Garcia thanked the Defence Headquarters for the warm reception and reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with Nigeria. He recognised Nigeria’s leading role in advancing peace, stability and security in West Africa and across Africa.
Mr Garcia also commended the efforts of the Armed Forces of Nigeria in combating terrorism and other security challenges, assuring the Defence Headquarters of continued US support through enhanced defence cooperation, security assistance and strategic dialogue. Both sides also exchanged views on regional security issues and explored new areas of collaboration to advance shared security objectives
