The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) have taken steps to strengthen collaboration on climate services, climate data management, and national climate resilience initiatives following a high-level meeting in Abuja.

The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, paid a courtesy visit to the Director-General of the NCCC Secretariat, Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi, to explore areas of mutual cooperation in tackling climate change.
Prof. Anosike emphasized that NiMet remains the custodian of Nigeria’s long-term meteorological records, providing the critical atmospheric data needed for climate trend analysis, climate risk assessment, and reliable climate projections.

He called for stronger institutional collaboration in developing climate projections, enhancing early warning systems, standardizing climate data, and conducting joint research to support evidence-based climate policies.

The NiMet DG noted that improved collaboration would enable policymakers to access localized, science-driven information for effective climate adaptation and mitigation while improving the translation of global climate projections into practical advisories for vulnerable communities and climate-sensitive sectors.

Prof. Anosike also highlighted the importance of quality meteorological and climate data in attracting international climate finance, proposing joint funding initiatives to strengthen climate resilience, early warning systems, and climate infrastructure across Nigeria.

In his response, NCCC Director-General Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi commended NiMet for its vital role in delivering weather and climate services and expressed strong support for deeper collaboration between both institutions.

Both organizations agreed to formalize their partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which will cover climate services, climate data management, climate research, early warning systems, capacity development, and other areas of shared interest.

The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of NiMet and the NCCC to advancing Nigeria’s climate agenda through stronger institutional partnerships, improved climate services, evidence-based policymaking, and coordinated efforts to protect lives, livelihoods, and the environment.
